I work in manufacturing, product development. With the Wuhan virus pandemic going on, my employer has ordered people to work from home unless they have to interact with the product in some manner—testing, troubleshooting, etc. But generally I will be in my living room and working on my laptop. My TV screen is working as a 50” computer monitor now.
Usually at work I like to walk around from time to time. My building is connected to two others via subterranean tunnels. It’s great for walking around and getting exercise.
In the next few weeks I am going to have to get some exercise in each day, and make sure I don’t stay cooped up in my living room all day. We have lots of sidewalks and plenty of space so I should be safe.
Fortunately the weather is getting better around here, so I can usually go out and walk around from time to time in my neighborhood.
I also will try to eat better than I have been. It’s seems that Wuhan is more likely to make you sick if you are in poor health to begin with, or if you are elderly. So it’s good to have your defenses as strong as possible, so that you don’t have to go to a medical facility and deal with the ensuing chaos. I am going to get some produce today and start juicing again in the mornings.
Regarding Healthy Wage and DietBet: I do have some Healthy Wage action going on. I figure it’s a good opportunity to make progress on this.
I imagine this will be challenging for people on wagers right now, or considering starting a new wager. It’s disruptive to routines, including getting exercise and access to certain foods and supplements that are conducive to weight loss.
On the other hand, getting in better shape will make us more robust to health threats like Wuhan in the future. Being at high risk for a heart attack due to obesity, for example, is now doubly risky because our medical systems are being heavily taxed. But the nature of Wuhan as I see it tells me that precautionary measures make a big difference in how one gets through this from a health standpoint.
My strategy is as follows:
- Follow all the cleanliness and sanitation guidelines
- Keep distance from people as much as possible
- Plenty of fruit and veggies, protein, etc.
- Plenty of fresh water
- Plenty of sunlight
- Plenty of coffee
- Plenty of fiber ( 🧻 lasts longer)
- Avoid cable news
- Cut down on social media
Another big one is to limit data consumption. I have seen so much data on how many people have Wuhan and how many people died, and what people are projecting for the future.
Even though this is a month old, the salient point is that the numbers can skyrocket or go up modestly depending on very small changes as to how well everybody practices containment and mitigation. It’s like Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park and his chaos theory—just like your can’t predict weather in a fortnight, you can’t predict where we will be with this thing by, say, March 27.
Which is when I will weigh out for my $250 jackpot challenge at Healthy Wage. I intend to collect. That’s what I am going to concentrate on in the next 2 weeks. Instead of watching NCAA players shoot hoops on the tube, I’ll do it myself in my driveway. My son might like to learn H-O-R-S-E too.
Keep calm and keep safe, everyone.
If you’re thinking about doing Healthy Wage, here’s my HWSim app links: full version and lite version. Whether you want to start now or wait until this Wuhan thing is over, it’s up to you. But if you are ready now, it can be a great way to mitigate any 401(k) damage you might be sustaining.
